Form
'This space intentionally left blank' is less immediately provocative but more Hofstadterially confusing.

News: Lack of Communication
I've talked before about the demise of written language, largely due to the internet. With symbols, shorthand and 'leet speak' so common online, I can only shudder in horror at the thought of how future generations will write to each other.

What's become even more disturbing to me, however, is how lazy we've gotten about communicating. Allow me to give you an example.

It's John's birthday today and being the close friends that you are, you seek to wish him a very happy birthday. To accomplish this feat, you will:

A )Write on his facebook Wall
B )Send him a twitter message, never forgetting the @
C )Compose a MySpace Private Message
D )Send him an E-mail
E )Head on over to Hallmark.com, to grab one of their many clever birthday e-cards
F )Mention him in your next Blog post
G )Comment on his LiveJournal post
H )Send a Txt Message
I )Pick up the Phone and Call him

Be honest with yourself, which option did you choose?

All of us, myself included, have gotten lazy. Technology may have enabled it, but we made the choice, and we continue to make that choice. As time goes on, I suspect that the pick up the phone option won't even appear in your thought process.

What we're doing is creating a society that is so impersonal, that our children will feel more comfortable typing on a keyboard in the privacy of their own home, as opposed to direct human interaction. That's not a pleasant though, to me.

Do me a favor, won't you? Next time you need to get in touch with someone, whatever the reason, either pick up the phone or go see them face to face.

It makes a difference.

- Because I can.

Quote of the Day

"Well, I'm a jet fuel genius
I can solve the world's problems
Without even trying
I have dozens of friends and the fun never ends
That is, as long as I'm buying
Is it any wonder I'm not the president
(He's not the president)
Is it any wonder I'm null and void?"

2038
If only we'd chosen 1944-12-02 08:45:52 as the Unix epoch, we could've combined two doomsday scenarios into one and added a really boring scene to that Roland Emmerich movie.

Life is good...
Not much really has happened. Though I did have to look at my own journal to remember what the hell I had said last time. Oh yeah. No more rotations. Have a lab home. That bit.

Ok, so lab stuffs aren't going so great. Things aren't working. But hey, that's the fun of grad school, right? I live for that 1% of the time things actually work. And then I go out drinking. Or stay in drinking. Alcohol is there, that's the important part.

Anyways... I am in a rare happy bouncy "The world is AWESOME!" mood this morning. Well, it's not so random. There are a few things that contribute to it.

1) I went to sleep at like... 11pm last night. Before midnight! And I slept most of the night, too! (damn kitties and 3am wanting pettins)

2) #1 was likely due to something I don't want to put here. Is a seekrit. Also, this seekrit also is making me happy, or at least feeling happy. Also, get your mind out of the gutter.

3) iPod on shuffle and listening while at work. I am such a music whore. Music makes me happy. I wish I would remember this more often. Every time I just sit and put my iPod on shuffle and tune out the rest of the world and just work on my stuff, I feel happy. I also dance around lab. I'm sure they think I'm strange. Or rather.. stranger.

4) LOAVES OF MEAT!! Kelly's mother (or her Mippy as she is called) made me a giant round loaf of meat! I <3 meatloaf. And her meatloaf is awesome!

5) Therefore, I brought my lunch. Carrots (because I am a rabbit), cherries (because I can't resist the fuckers), and a slice of a loaf of meat. Not spending money also makes me happy. And bringing my lunch somehow also makes me happy. I don't know why.

Wheee!

Forgotten verse
I have stuck, somewhere in my brain, bits of a bible verse - something about knowing someone by their works - am I just cobbling things together or is that a an actual verse?

Got it - thanks, all.

News: Film Elitism
Before I get into my topic for the day, I just wanted to thank everyone for their birthday wishes yesterday. Nothing like a few thousand emails to highlight the fact that I'm one year closer to the grave.

Special appreciation goes out to the folks who noted that while I might be old, I'm still not even remotely as old as Lar (he's very old). When you're facing the abyss, it's surprising how comforting it can be knowing that someone is going to reach it before you, statistically speaking.

I may be a couple of weeks late with this, but what's on my mind this morning happens to be Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. Specifically, the reviews.

For months, like everyone else with a childhood entrenched in the 80s, I was greatly anticipating the release of the new Transformers movie. The first one was a great ride, and the blu-ray sits proudly on my rack of honor (right above the rack of shame, where Babylon AD sits).

As the sequel got closer to its worldwide release, the reviews began pouring in, almost universally negative. The acting was bad, the dialogue was laughable, certain characters were deemed as blatant racism and the plot was non-existent. Suffice it to say, I was rather discouraged. Yet still, as the devoted dork that I am, I still went to see the film the week it came out.

And I loved it.

It was fun, I laughed more than I have at other films that filed themselves as 'comedies', I went 'holy shite' a few times and I was thoroughly entertained. In short, it was everything I hoped it would be, and everything a summer blockbuster should be. Say what you will about Michael Bay, he's the reason why they invented Blu-Ray.

After the movie, while we were discussing how many times we saw Megan Fox run in slow motion (and how that was nowhere near enough), I began to wonder about the disconnect between my feelings towards the film and the others I had read beforehand.

I think I've come up with a conclusion.

Not every film is going to be an Oscar Winner, not every film tries to be. Why does every movie need to wow us with its use of language, or showcase an actor that does nothing more than glower at the camera for 3+ hours? Why can't some movies, just be movies, with the sole intention to entertain?

Why do I need to leave a theatre feeling depressed at the human condition, or the state of the world? Like all of you, my brain is active from the moment my eyes open to lizard-like slits in the morning until the instant I begin snoring at night. Shutting my brain off for a couple of hours in a dark theatre is a treat.

Transformers 2 was a spectacle, a visual delight, and I was entertained. That's more than enough for me.

For those who were expecting or demanding a Shakespearean effort, let me remind you what the subject matter is: Alien robots that turn into cars.

And sometimes planes.

A little escape-ism is never a bad thing, and it's nothing to look down upon or to be ashamed of enjoying.

- Because I can.

Quote of the Day

"You know what my father was? A wheel! The first wheel! And do you know what he transformed into? Nothing! But he did it with honor!"
-Jetfire, from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen(2009)
