Tales of the sheep
Protect the minds of the young sheep therefore, and remove all that may taint them. Be ye still then sheep and obey the Ones, for they know ye best and do ye good.

And it went out, that the Keepers looked and lo! a sheep was found looking at the grass before eating.

And the Keepers saw this and were afraid.

And the Keepers went to the ones and said `There is a sheep who looks before feeding, what should we do?`

The Ones spake; `If the sheep looks before feeding it is aware, it is thinking. Take the sheep and bring it before us.` So the Keepers went on and clave the sheep from the herd, and brought it before the Ones.

The Ones looked at the sheep from their Seat and spake; `Sheep, why do you look at the grass before eating?`

The sheep answered `The other sheep poop in the grass as they feed and I look to make sure I do not eat that poop`

The Ones looked at the sheep `The other sheep eat the grass and do not worry about the poop, why do not you?`

The sheep replied `The other sheep are often ill, I wish to be a strong and Useful sheep.`

The Ones trembled that the sheep was thinking thus and said `In so thinking before eating you eat less and have become weak. You must come with us and eat of only the best grass we have to offer.`

The sheep went with the Ones and ate of the Special Grass. Quickly then did the sheep became calm and peaceful. The Ones smiled and all was well again.

Oddly enough, it sounds like something you'd find in a book by Lois Lowry (The Giver trilogy) or Margaret Peterson Haddix (Secret Children series). :-)
